Congratulations to the newly elected 2008 Buccaneer Junior Yacht Club Officers:

Comodore - Dylan McRee

Vice-Commodore - Griffin Wacker

Secretary/Treasurer - Kara Kimbrell

Fleet Captain/Race Coordinator - Jack Wacker

The Galloway Regatta will be held the weekend of August 16th & 17th at Gulfport Yacht Club.  Optimist (including Opti Green), Laser Radial and Full Rig Lasers will sail.  Gulfport's new clubhouse is now open and the hospitality is promised to be supreme

Thanks to Prince and Dolly Turner for donating 4 Lasers and a 6 place trailer to the club.  See Fleet Captain Karl Kleinschrodt about taking one out.

Here is a great tutorial Karl found on the web for "Old School" Laser rigging.

Please review this website to learn how to correctly rig the yacht club lasers. Please note that this is refered to as "the old school way" to rig a laser. The class has modified the rules so the outhaul, vang and cunningham can be upgraded. The upgrade package is about 6 months salary, so dream on for the yacht club boats.

• • Parents, the boats are available for use whenever you want. One-on-one practice is the best way for the lesser experienced kids to get better. If you are not familiar with rigging them see me, the Youth Coordinator, and I will show you. Children must be supervised when using Club boats both inside and outside the harbor. Please emphasize to the children that these are their boats too and should be cared for accordingly.

• All children that are at least 6 years of age should be encouraged to be a Cadet or Junior member if they are going to use the Club boats. See the Coordinator or Commodore for membership applications for them.

• SUNSCREEN!! Let the kids know that yes, they can get sunburned this time of year. Please make sure your child has sunscreen applied before sailing.

Junior and Boat Rules:

1. All Juniors must wear life jackets when using club boats and in club and GYA regattas. 2

. Lifejackets should have whistles tied to them with sufficiently long tether so it can be reached without bending the head down.

3. Juniors must wear shoes! Boots are best, even the cheap ones from Sports Academy. Crocs aren’t worth a crock! We see too many cut and broken, and injured toes

4. Children must be supervised when using Club boats.

5. Boats must be returned to their storage locations and sails, blades and tillers put up.

6. Boats with plugs and bailers are to be stored where they will drain.

7. Optimists must have bow lines and bailers to be used.

8. Optimists should be stored with floatation bags 25% deflated to allow for expansion.

9. All equipment damage and loss must be reported. Things happen but we need to be able to repair and replace parts to keep the boats working.

10. Juniors need to have approval by Youth Coordinator or Fleet Captain for each type of boat, sailing location (in or out of harbor) and conditions (light or heavy winds). This does not include supervised practice where chase boats are available.
