Friday’s Leaders Crowned Champions on Saturday at U.S. Men’s and Women’s Sailing Championships

BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. (September 26, 2009) – The fourth and final day of the U.S. Men’s and Women’s Sailing Championships was washed out. The decision was made late this afternoon to call the regatta due to rain and lack of wind. The standings from Friday are now final results, and US SAILING has two new champions to celebrate.
In the men’s division, the Charles D. Mallory Trophy and gold medals for first place were merited by Andrew Eagan (Metairie, La. / Bay-Waveland YC) and the crew of brother, Marcus Eagan and Charlotte Santa Cruz. They finished with a total of 15 points. Second place was won by Ken Kleinschrodt (Mobile, Ala. / Buccaneer YC), John Marshall and Donovan Brennan who had 23 points. Kleinschrodt finished second in last year’s U.S. Men’s Sailing Championship. Bronze medals were won by Jackson Benvenutti (Charleston, S.C. / CORA) and his crew Jessica Koenig and John Bowden with 24 total points,
Eagan will also receive a Sperry Top-Sider grant toward the entry fee of a NOOD regatta of his choice. The Royal Victoria Yacht Club Seamanship Trophy was awarded to Claude Danemann (Bay- Waveland Yacht Club) and his team for his service in preparing and maintaining the borrowed boat fleet prior to and during the regatta. The Staton J. Peele Jr. Sportsmanship Trophy was awarded to David Rousseau (Canton, Mass.) and his crew Blake Suddath and Dennis Foley.
Amy Kleinschrodt (Mobile, Ala. / Buccaneer YC) and her crew of Sara Hall and Ashley Hall won the Mrs. Charles Francis Adams Trophy and gold medals for first place with a total of 16 points. Natalie Coleman-Fuller (Hartford, Conn.) and her crew of Emily Taylor and Allison Coleman finished second. The bronze medals stayed in flux overnight as there was collision in the eighth race on day three. The decision was made that there would be no changes in the scoring. Therefore, US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics member, Katy Lovell (New Orleans, La. / Southern YC), edged out Greta Mittman (Garland, Texas) for third place with 31 points. Katy’s crew members were Clerc Cooper and Anne Edwards.
Amy Kleinschrodt will also receive a grant from Sperry Top-Sider toward the entry fee at US SAILING's Rolex International Women’s Keelboat regatta on October 7-10 in Rochester, N.Y. The Francis Mc Ilwain Wakeman Sportsmanship Trophy was awarded to Nancy Claypool (New Orleans, La/ Southern YC) and her crew Carrie Berger and Terry Dees-Kolenich. The Shipshape award was given to Edie Sullivan (Charlotte, N.C. / Pass Christian YC) and her crew of Shelley Killeen and Shirley Charbonnet.
These national championships were sailed in Flying Scots, hosted by the Bay-Waveland Yacht Club and sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A., Dry Creek Vineyard, and Sperry Top-Sider.
